Awards for Scientific Excellence 2006
IASO is pleased to announce the winners of its Awards
for Scientific Excellence 2006, which will be presented
at the 10th International Congress on Obesity.
The
Willendorf Award for outstanding clinical contributions
in the field of obesity - Professor Yuji Matsuzawa
(Japan). Prof Matsuzawa will give a plenary lecture
on the research that led to this award on Monday 4th
September 2006, 8.30-9.30am.
The
Wertheimer Award for outstanding research by a
basic scientist in the field of obesity - Dr Kenji
Kangawa (Japan). Dr Kangawa will give a plenary
lecture on the research that led to this award on
Wednesday 6th September 2006, 8.15- 9.15am.
The
André Mayer Award for outstanding research in
the field of obesity by an investigator under the
age of 40 - Dr Safad Farooqi (UK). Dr Farooqi
will give a plenary lecture on the research that led
to this award on Monday 4th September 2006, 4.30 -
5.30pm.
The
Award for outstanding contributions to Population
Science and Public Health has been awarded to
Prof Philip James (UK). Prof James will give
a lecture on Wednesday 6th September 2006, 8.15- 9.15am.
IASO
President Dr Claude Bouchard will be giving
a short presentation prior to the Willendorf Award
from 8.15-8.30am on Monday 4th September.

The IASO New Investigator Award
IASO
is delighted to announce the five finalists for its
New Investigator Award, supported by GlaxoSmithKline.
Each
finalist will present their research during a special
plenary session during the 10th International Congress
on Obesity, Sydney, Australia.
- Anthony
Civitarese (USA) - Novel Role for Adiponectin
Pathway in Human Skeletal Muscle Bioenergetics
- Elizabeth
Delbridge (Australia) - Long- term weight maintenance:
does diet composition matter? A randomized, prospective
trial.
- Carel
Le Roux (UK) - The role of Peptide YY (PYY)
in the control of appetite
- Magdalena
Pasarica (USA) - Induction of Differentiation
in Human Preadipocytes May Contribute to Adipogenic
Effect of Human Adenovirus Ad-36
- Matthew
Sabin (UK) - Unsaturated fatty acids diminish
the detrimental effects of saturated fatty acids
on insulin signaling in human muscle by decreasing
de-novo ceramide production.
The
New Investigator Award final will be held on Tuesday
5th September 2006 at 11.15am.
The prize giving ceremony where the overall winner
will be announced will be held on Wednesday 6th September
2006 at 9.15am.

Per Björntorp Travel Fellowship Fund
To
commemorate Professor Per Björntorp, IASO has created
a new travel bursary to assist young scientists and
clinicians who might otherwise be precluded from participation
at ICOs for financial reasons.
Two bursaries are available of up to US$2000 each
towards travel, accommodation and registration costs
of attending the ICO2006 in Sydney, Australia.
The
two winners are Catherine Lawrence (UK) and Krisztina
Hegyi (Hungary).

Online Launch in Sydney
The
new SCOPE website is now live. Visit www.scope-
online.org for details on how to apply for SCOPE
Fellowship within Europe, planned courses and accredited
courses.
This
website will also host the new SCOPE online course,
which is in its final stages of development and will
be launched during the ICO2006.
Sign
up to the SCOPE e-bulletin to receive an email updates
on all aspects of SCOPE, including notification of
when the online course is available. Alternatively,
if you are attending the 10th ICO in Sydney, Professor
Stephan Rössner will be holding a demonstration of
the online course on Thursday 7th September 2006
at 11.15am. If you would like to attend the demonstration,
please contact Kelly Robinson (krobinson@iaso.org).
You will also be able to visit us on Stand Number
6- 7 at any time during the congress to try the
course.
