Professor Rafael Gómez-Cuevas was born in Bogota Colombia and completed a medical degree at the Central University of Madrid, specialising in obesity and its clinical management. He is a founder and honorary president of the Colombian Association of Obesity and Metabolism (ASCOM), the oldest society of its kind in South America. He is also a founding member of the Latin-American Federation of Obesity (FLASO), serving as Vice-President and then President from 1995-1998. During that time he led the III Latin-American Congress of Obesity, as well as the First and Third Pan-American Courses of Obesity. His achievements in FLASO include: the redaction of its bylaws and regulations, the foundation of the Societies of Obesity of Peru, Ecuador, Cuba and Venezuela, and his unanimous election as FLASO Vice-president of IASO. In addition, he is a member of the Argentinean, Uruguayan, Peruvian, Panamanian and Spanish Associations of Obesity, and of the Mexican, Ecuadorian, Bolivian and Spanish Societies of Endocrinology and Nutrition. In 2008 he was named Executive Director of the SCOPE program in Latin America.
Rafael Gómez-Cuevas has been involved in more than 180 works of clinical investigation in National and International Congresses of Obesity. He has published the following books: ‘Obesity: a highway towards the heart attack’, ‘Obesity à la carte’ and ‘Disorders of the Food Conduct and its small perversions’. He is also heavily involved in obesity education and is Emeritus Teacher and Honorary Chief of the Endocrinology’s Department at the University Hospital, Samaritana in Bogota.
Rafael Gómez-Cuevas is also a literary author and a Member of the Spanish-American Academy of Letters.
