Professor Tessa van der Merwe is a Honorary Professor of the Department of Endocrinology, University of Pretoria South Africa. She is also a Honorary Life President of the South African Society for Obesity Metabolism (SASOM). Her main academic and Clinical interests lie in Bariatric surgery and its use in obesity. Professor Merwe established Centres of Bariatric Excellence throughout Southern Africa, and acts as a co-Director for the Centre  for Metabolic Medicine and Surgery at Sunninghill Hospital. She is currently Honorary Secretary for the International Association for the Study of Obesity (IASO) until 2010.
