The International Association for the Study of Obesity

Press Release 1st June 2009

After serving as president of IASO for 3 years Arne Astrup is stepping down a year early due to an appointment as director of a new centre for developing a New Nordic Diet for disease prevention at his University of Copenhagen. The new appointment comes on top of an increasing and demanding work load as head of department of Human Nutrition, at University of Copenhagen. Arne’s department has been very successful attracting increasing funding, to the extent that the number of staff has almost doubled in just three years.

Arne’s international success has highlighted his ever increasing work load and it has become apparent he has limited "spare" time. IASO is also growing and developing and placing increasing demands on his time so Arne has decided to step down as the president of IASO one year early.

The IASO Executive committee would like to thank Arne for all his hard work and dedication to the Association over many years. He has contributed substantially to the strategy and direction of IASO which has allowed the Association to develop and achieve its goals.

Arne has been responsible for the launching of one of the most successful new obesity journals, Obesity Reviews. In 2008 Obesity Reviews received its first impact factor assessment and with a score of 7.8 it is now the obesity journal with the highest impact. This is a very significant achievement and reflects the commitment Arne has made to the high standards demanded as editor in chief of such a successful journal.

Arne has initiated many new ventures within IASO including the Obesity Expert Forum and the Nutritional Discussion Forum. These have enabled IASO to provide an interactive forum to exchange ideas and knowledge with the pharmaceutical and nutritional industry sectors.

According to the IASO Articles of Association the President Elect, Professor Philip James, will automatically take up the presidency for the remaining year (August 2009-August 2010) and the IASO Executive Committee is currently seeking and will nominate an Interim President Elect.

Arne has kindly agreed to remain as IASO Chairman from August 2009 until August 2010 so that IASO can continue to benefit from his international experience and expertise. Arne will permanently chair the Expert Forum; continue to act as Obesity Reviews Editor in Chief which continues to go from strength to strength. Arne will be retained as a key scientific advised for the IASO International Think tanks on obesity policy, treatment and guidelines.
