IASO AT NAASO

IASO will be at the NAASO Annual Scientific Meeting in Vancouver, Canada and will have a stand in the exhibition hall. The IASO executive committee, general council and other committees will take place during the meeting. We will be able to provide you with information on IASO’s journals, the work of IOTF, and our conferences, amongst others. Visit us at stands 423 and 425. We look forward to meeting you.

 

IASO NEWSLETTER

The next edition of the newsletter will be published in October. All delegates attending the NAASO meeting will receive a copy. In addition, your national association will receive copies to forward to members. If you do not receive your copy please let us know. You can also view IASO newsletters online or download from www.iaso.org/newsletter.

 

10TH INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON OBESITY - 3RD-8TH SEPTEMBER 2006    www.ico2006.com

The scientific programme includes Plenary and State of the Art lectures, Symposia, Debates, Free Communications and Poster presentations. The programme features plenary lectures by the IASO award winners and late breaking abstracts. The award lectures are placed throughout the programme and posters are will sited in the exhibition and lunch area. A unique feature is three to four summary sessions to be delivered in languages other than English.

 

The social programme offers delegates, accompanying persons and their families the opportunity to see the best of Sydney and beyond. There are too many options to list them all in this bulletin, so please see the ICO 2006 website for further details.

 

Three satellites have been organised:

 

·         Physical Activity and Obesity - 31st August–2nd September 2006, Brisbane, Australia. The focus of the Conference is - Moving Matters – in the physical activity and exercise domains: promoting, monitoring, measuring and prescribing in the context of the overweight and obese. ·         Community-based Obesity Prevention - 30th August – 2nd September 2006, Geelong (Nr Melbourne), Australia. The conference will explore community-wide approaches to obesity prevention. For more information please visit www.deakin.edu.au/hbs/who-obesity

 

·         Genetics to Community – What is Obesity? Socio-cultural and Ethno-genetic determinants of Obesity - 9th-10th September 2006, Auckland, New Zealand. Further information will be available soon. Please keep checking the ICO website.

 

Registration includes attendance at all sessions, a satchel with program book, abstract book, CD-Rom, morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea, the Opening Spectacular and Welcome Reception and the Congress Party. Early-bird registration is available until June 2006. Members of IASO affiliated national associations (your association must have fully paid its IASO membership fees), and full time students will be eligible for a discount on registration fees.

 

ICO2006 will be promoted at the NAASO meeting in Vancouver on the IASO stand (423-425).

 

 

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL ON PEDIATRIC OBESITY (IJPO)

IASO’s new, peer-reviewed, quarterly journal is devoted to research into obesity during childhood and adolescence. The topic is currently at the centre of intense interest in the scientific community, and is of increasing concern to health policy-makers and the public at large.  The Journal will publish original research articles, short communications and review articles on a broad range of topics relevant to child and adolescent obesity and related disorders. The Journal is calling for manuscripts on a broad range of topics relevant to pediatric obesity, such as:

 

·         Genetic, molecular, biochemical and physiological origins of obesity

·         Metabolic consequences of pediatric obesity

·         Epidemiology and population-based studies of pediatric obesity

·         Measurement issues in assessing child and adolescent adiposity, physical activity and nutrition

·         Clinical management of overweight and obese children and adolescents

·         Co-morbidities linked to pediatric obesity – mechanisms, assessment, and treatment

·         Life-cycle factors eg familial, intrauterine and developmental aspects of pediatric obesity

·         Nutrition security and the “double burden” of obesity and malnutrition

·         Community and public health measures to prevent overweight and obesity in children and adolescents

IASO OFFICIAL JOURNAL SUBSCRIPTIONS

Now is the time to be thinking about renewing or taking out subscriptions for IASO’s other official journals – the International Journal of Obesity and Obesity Reviews. More details and links to subscribe to the journals can be found on the IASO website’s Members area. If you do not have a password to access, contact inquiries@iaso.org.

 

NEW IASO WEBSITE

The IASO website is currently being redesigned and updated to ensure ease of use and to build in exciting new features for IASO members.  It is aimed to launch the new site later this year. The URL will remain the same – please continue to visit www.iaso.org for updates.

 

NEW FLASO PRESIDENT

Dr Walmir Coutinho has taken over the FLASO Presidency at the recent Latin American Congress in Rio de Janeiro in August 2005. Dr Coutinho will be in office for 3 years.

 

GLOBAL ALLIANCE

IASO is forging ahead with an ambitious collaboration programme involving partners in the Global Alliance for the Prevention of Obesity and Chronic Disease under the leadership of Prof Philip James, chair of the International Obesity TaskForce.

Alliance representatives from the International Diabetes Federation, World Heart Federation, International Union of Nutritional Sciences, the International Pediatric Association as well as IASO, will meet in Quebec City, to discuss next steps as well as participating in a symposium with a number of leading academics from McGill and Laval Universities and others involved in obesity prevention programmes in Quebec.

Exploratory meetings have been convened in a number of countries including
Malaysia, Singapore, Brazil, Thailand and Hong Kong with national associations affiliated to the Alliance partners and other players involved in chronic disease prevention and with some government ministries. A global policy advisory group has been formed and a draft framework for policy development is being "road tested". Look out for more details in the newsletter.

 

SCOPE COURSE at ISOH, Berlin

The next SCOPE course will take place during the 4th International Symposium on Obesity and Hypertension (ISOH’05) in October 2005.  The course will be entitled ‘The SCOPE Obesity Management Course for Specialists in Cardiovascular Medicine’ and will take place on Saturday 29 th October 2005.  It will feature presentations as follows:

Obesity and Cardiovascular Risk - Jens Jordan (Germany)

Obesity and Hypertension - Krzysztof Narkiewicz (Poland)
