IASO is calling for applications for its New Investigator Award 2006, which is being held in conjunction with the 10th International Congress on Obesity in Sydney (3-8 September 2006). The Award was launched in 2002 to promote interest in obesity research amongst investigators who are still in training. Alliance representatives from the International Diabetes Federation, World Heart Federation, International Union of Nutritional Sciences, the International Pediatric Association as well as IASO, attended a meeting in Quebec City in October where a symposium was held with leading academics from McGill and Laval Universities, and many others from government and NGOs involved in obesity prevention programmes in Quebec.
The Alliance has formed a policy advisory group has been formed is developing a draft framework for policy development which is being revised in consultation with national NGO groups in developing countries.
Alliance plans will extend regional links between the partner NGOs, develop detailed economic analyses to provide powerful evidence for prevention, offer an expanding database of prevention actions around the world, and support and evaluate interventions undertaken by national Alliance groups.
Future plans include a packed programme to re-visit the national groups already formed and to reach out to new groups in the Pacific islands, China and other parts of Asia eventually including India and Pakistan.
